SUNDA
ISLANDS MOTOR CHALLENGE
This
exciting motorcycle experience across the Sunda Islands in
Indonesia
shows you the difference between the islands, the more you ride
eastward. East of the so called “
Wallace Street
” is
so much different from west (Java and
Sumatra
). The best way of taking this all in is of course on a motorcycle,
the Indonesian Tiger 2000 (actually a Honda, made in
Indonesia
). You are flexible and can get anywhere on any kind of surface to
have a look at the stunning culture and nature the former Dutch
colony has to offer.
We
will start our journey in romantic Bali, after which we take the
ferry to the
island
of
Lombok
. The ferries between the islands are the only way of transportation
and are big ships full of trucks, cars, busses and our motorcycles.
Whilst onboard everybody relaxes, enjoys the view and gossips with
each other. After arriving in
Lombok
we take a beautiful asphalt road along the north coast. The smell of
cloves accompanies us past fields of rice, stunning views across the
nearby sea and above all this towers the Rinjani volcano.
The route on
Sumbawa
could, at some parts, be a racing circuit with hundreds of curves.
The only difference being the oxcarts,
horse and carriages, colourful markets, smelling spices and a
giant forest you pass by. And in the night time you enjoy the
Indonesian beer Bintang. Around Bima we will visit traditional
villages where the people have kept their age old traditions.
Now
Flores
has to be the absolute surprise of all the islands. It looks like
the whole island is covered with dense tropical rain forest, fields
of blossoming flowers (hence the name Flores, meaning Flower in
Portuguese) next to the road, parakeets and parrots fly over our
heads and the beaches are white, clean and deserted.
The road is becoming a real challenge as well, at most places
it can’t be called a road. Also the inhabitants of Flores have
different looks, more Papua or Aboriginal (
Australia
isn’t that far away from here…). We rent our own boat to visit
the
Komodo
Islands
. Snorkelling, swimming, relaxing and trying to find the famous
Komodo Dragon on the
island
of
Rinca
. This is the only place in the world to find this pre historic
creature. At night we fall asleep on deck with the memory of
millions of stars on our mind. A few days later we gaze into the
next wonder: the three coloured lakes in the crater of the Kalimutu
volcano.
When
we finally reach Maumere at the end of our three week exploration,
we feel we have seen a hidden part of
Indonesia
not many tourists have visited yet. Especially
Flores
. While we board a plane back to
Bali
the motorcycles are being put on transport. They
have served us well.
As
a motorcycle destination Indonesia has a lot to offer: an ever
changes scenery, an extremely friendly population, a good motorcycle,
hotels and beautiful resorts, splendid food, and a variety of
surface to ride on. What else could you want more?

Frequently asked questions |
Riding
experience?
We recommend that riders have
a minimum of three years of riding experience. You need a
drivers license and International drivers license for riding a
motorcycle in Indonesia.
What
people join
us?
People from all walks of life. Our youngest riders so far have been
in their early twenties and the oldest was sixty five. Most of them
have great driving experience. Most of all our riders always
seem to enjoy each other’s company and seem to have genuine
passion for enjoying life
Motorcycle?
The
Tiger is actually a Honda and is only made in Indonesia. It’s
much loved by the population and for most a dream to have (but not
often fulfilled). Superb road ability, highly manoeuvrable, not too
heavy, so ideal for the road conditions in Indonesia
.
Do
you have rules or regulations that we should be aware of?
We only ask that you follow the laws of the country we're riding in,
that you don't conduct yourself in a manner that endangers other
members of the group. We also insist that you do not drink
alcoholic beverages until after your motorcycle has been retired for
the evening. Riding privileges will be suspended for anyone
under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If a rider operates
the bike after drinking an alcoholic beverage or using a
mind-altering drug, the damage waiver signed by the rider is
considered null and void and the rider incurs unlimited liability
for damage to the motorcycle
Speed
during the day?
You
will drive at your own pace, having enough time to take in the
magnificent surroundings, take photo's or stop for a tea. We are on
a holiday! The
one rule is that we do not overtake the road captain up front,
as he knows the way to go. Apart from that we will see everybody at
appointed hours, tea- or lunch breaks. Besides, once on the back roads you will see that speeding is nearly
impossible.
Riding
clothing?
Wear
what you normally wear (riding suite, gloves, boots and helmet) at
home during a long trip, although because of the heat we wouldn't
advice leather. a good fitting helmet is very important.
How do I carry the luggage?
All
your personal luggage will be transported in the back up car.
I
don’t have my driver’s licence?
Then you can’t drive a motorcycle, BUT you can join the tour as a
pillion driver! There is also a possibility of coming along in our
support vehicle. Please contact us for details.
